Skywatch: Pink Horizon

This picture was taken from my car while crossing the causeway over the Reservoir earlier this week. I'm sorry if it's a little fuzzy, but I couldn't miss out on this beautiful pink sky and its reflection.

Take a look at some of the other skies around the world!

Street Art

If you can't tell, I've been spending a lot of time lately in the Fondren District. This lovely lady and her dog are part of the outdoor art you'll see in the area. I don't know who the artist is, but it's quite a creative piece. She certainly gets lots of looks from passers-by!

Fondren Express

The Fondren Express will take you in and around downtown Jackson - from the University Hospital to the restaurant corner, with plenty of cute shops in between. There's nothing like a trolley ride (even if it is a really a bus) to make you feel nostalgic for ye olde days. And it adds to the quaintness of the Fondren District.

More Flowers

I found this planter filled with flowers and fake birds in front of a downtown store. I guess I like any kind of birds, even ones that don't really fly!

Spring Flowers

I never tire of photographing flowers, especially bright, sunny, yellow ones!

Rainbow Natural Foods

This is where I am currently performing The Mystery of Twicknam Vicarage with Fondren Theatre Workshop. It's part of a series of one act plays, All in the Timing.

Rainbow is a co-operative grocery store. All of the produce is organic and the meats and eggs come from farms where animals are treated ethically. They also have a large selection of health and beauty products and vitamins. If it was closer to where I live, I would shop there more often. I try to buy produce locally as much as I can.

Our show is done for this weekend, but we start up again next Thursday. I just hope I won't forget everything before then!

Sky Watch Friday

My husband and I had lunch at this Ruby Tuesday today. They have a lovely salad bar.

The weather has been strange today, the air is heavy and oppressive and it's been raining on and off. You can see the weighty clouds just waiting to let it pour.

Take a look at some of the other skies around the world today!

May Theme Day: Numbers

I was driving behind this car recently and this tag begs the question, where are YAHWEHs 1-6?

Take a look at some number-filled posts from around the world.

High Noon Cafe

The High Noon is a small vegetarian-friendly cafe located inside the Rainbow Foods Co-op. I have never actually eaten there, but after perusing their menu, I'd love to try some of their specialties! (I am a vegetarian, btw). They also had organic hamburgers for those who just can't make a meal without the meat.

The Jackson Free Press is the city's alternative newspaper. Each year they have a reader poll on the "best ofs" around town. Apparently the High Noon has won quite a few!

Cajun Princess

This is the first bloom on my new hibiscus tree, the Cajun Princess. When I visited my auntie in New Orleans last month, she had the most beautiful hibiscus plant. It was dark orange in the center and lighter around the edges. I believe it came from the same nursery as mine.

I have always loved hibiscus plants and I'm glad to now live in a climate where I can actually grow them!

Baby Alligator

If you look very closely, you'll see the head of a baby (or maybe a teen) alligator peeking out from under the water. We saw several of this little guys on the golf course today.

Some other golfers told us, if you put your club in the water near them, they get curious and may come out of the water. My husband and decided it's better to let them be though.

Patriotic Mackers

I don't think I've ever seen Ronald McDonald in such a patriotic display.

Bird House

In an effort to attract feathered friends to my yard, I purchased a birdhouse. My husband installed it for me and I'm just waiting for some little birdies to move in. I know it may be a little late in the season as most birds have probably nested by now, but I am still hopeful!

I have also took some bird-attracting tips from the almighty bird blogger Abe, but so far they have not been too successful. I smeared some peanut butter on the trees - it was eaten by the squirrels. I put out a suet cake - a raccoon broke the structure and ran off with the cake. Grrr...

My last resort was to plant flowers that, according to their labels, attract birds and butterflies. So far, none of them have come up yet. But I'm excited to see if the claims are true and also to see the beautiful buds.

I hope everyone has a great weekend. I'll be working in my garden, if it doesn't rain too much.

Strawberry Plant

One of my colleagues at work gave me about 10 strawberry plants. They seem to have taken well to my garden, they have plenty of blooms and even a few berries are developing. I can't wait to taste the fruits of my labor!

The Rez

Here's another look at the Reservoir. It appears that someone is building a new restaurant out here. Let's hope it's successful. It will certainly have a great view!

Happy Earth Day!

In honor of Earth Day, I thought I would post the first magnolia blossom of the year. They are such beautiful and fragrant flowers. I love living in the Magnolia State!

The Cedars House

I visited the Cedars House today. It's one of the oldest houses in the Jackson area. It started as a two room cottage and through the years has been added onto and has grown into a lovely little residence.

Today it is an exhibition space maintained by the Fondren Renaissance Foundation. And at the moment, they are hosting a showing of local artists. There were many nice pieces of art on display, but for some reason I was drawn especially to this painting.

Plantation Interiors

The skies have turned from dark and ominous to bright blue! My husband wanted to take me to the Plantation Interiors for a look around today. This is the place where he bought the stump. Unfortunately, they were not open.

I hope we'll have time to go sometime during the week. I got a look at some of their inventory by peering through the windows. It looks like they have a lot of really nice things!

Skywatch: Ross Barnett Reservoir

Today's sky was ominous and cloudy. We had a very heavy afternoon storm and there were several tornado watches out. I stopped by this patch of the Rez (as it's known around here) on my way home from work. It's always a good place for reflection and photos!

To check out some other skies around the world, take a look here.

Grrr...

Unfortunately, daily service has been interrupted. Blogger is having serious problems and I can't upload my photo of the day. Regularly scheduled photo to return tomorrow, I hope!

Good?

This picture comes to you from my friendly neighborhood Kroger store! A new outpost just opened up off I-55 and today is the second time I've been there. It is quite convenient on my drive home from work and they have a large international section. My favorite area is the French aisle and I was very tempted to buy some extra-dark chocolate Petit Ecolier cookies today, but luckily I did not give into temptation!

I love this display of Swedish muesli and I think it's even funnier that it's mixed in with some Irish oatmeal. I guess those countries didn't deserve an actual aisle, so they just have to share a shelf. I wonder if Swedish people really partake in this particular breakfast delight, and if they do, is it really good?

More Beverages...

This is another look inside the Fondren Beverage Co. They have all kinds of old-time-y penants advertising different sorts of drinks.

The Heron, Finally!

I was on the golf course this afternoon and I finally got a (somewhat) up close snap of this beautiful, blue heron. Maybe she knows I'm thinking of leaving the club and wanted to get her close-up. In any case, it was just amazing. I love all kinds of birds and especially herons - they are so graceful.

Flowers

I'm not sure what kind of flowers these are. I think some kind of lily or daffodil. I am definitely enjoying the signs of spring around town and I hope you are too!

Heron on the Second

I often see this heron on the golf course, but I never manage to get a photo of her. If you look closely on the right, you'll see the blue beauty perched on a tree stump in the distance.

My husband and I are thinking of changing golf clubs. It will be hard to say goodbye to the beautiful scenery and wildlife here.

Skywatch

I caught this bit of sky at dusk today. That's the moon getting ready to rise. If you'd like to see some other skies, take a look here.

Thirsty?

This is a look at just some of the tasty drinks on offer at The Fondren Beverage Co.

Fondren is an area of downtown Jackson which is coming back into vogue. There are lots of cute little shops, art galleries and restaurants. It's one of the nicest places to hang out in Jackson. Tonight they had an open house, many of the shops stayed open late and offered snacks and drinks to patrons. There was also some live music in the streets. It was nice to get some fresh air and browse the shops.

Caterpillar

I found this dude out in one of my trees. I hope it's a sign that there will be lots of butterflies in my yard this summer!

Weed or Wildflower?

This flower began growing in my yard a few weeks ago. I purposely did not cut it down because I was curious to see what it would look like in bloom. After a weekend away, I returned to find this three foot monster! It is not the prettiest of flowers, but the yellow is nice and sunny.

Anyone here happen to know what kind of plant it is? I'll probably cut it down soon as it appears to be more weed-ish than wildflower-y.

Off to Reno!

I actually meant to post this photo earlier, but I never had a chance this weekend. This was the state of affairs at the Jackson airport last Friday. We had a small tornado that came through town at precisely the time my flight was supposed to leave. The nerve!

Although we took off late, I finally made it all the way to Salt Lake City Friday evening. On Saturday morning I landed in my final destination, Reno. Although my weekend was cut a little short, I enjoyed the time in Reno and nearby Lake Tahoe.

Gate 15 certainly looked different tonight when I got home. The trip home always seems to go faster than the trip there!

PS: ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK, KUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!
