Hacksche Hofe

The Hacksche Höfe (courtyards) were designed in the early 1900s. Electric trolley cars roam the mainly pedestrian streets, and the whole area has a really relaxed atmosphere. The interior facades of the buildings are covered with lovely ceramic tiles and it's a very nice place to relax a little after some hard shopping on Oranienburgstrasse or Rosenthalerstrasse. The streets are lined with funky boutiques and it gets very crowded on the weekends.

It also pays to look at your feet while walking in this area. When I was taking a peek at some of the smaller streets off of the main square, I found this pictured inscription. It is a remembrance of the Jewish residents of the building who were sent to death camps and died there. Once I had noticed this one, I couldn't stop seeing them everywhere. There are also many houses and apartment buildings that have plaques in their entrances memorializing the former residents who were deported.

I'll be back to my regular posting from Jackson tomorrow, but I hope you have enjoyed this trip to Berlin as much as I have!

I do visit and I do comment and I was here. I did look at your picture(s) and I did read what you wrote about them. I could say how great you are and how beautiful your work is but alas I would soon run out of things to say on the next blog I visited, so I just left this to prove I stopped and said a few words on Sunday.

My Rheumatoid Arthritis hurts so I am using the same message for all.

I've enjoyed your photos from Berlin. I must say I'm heartened that there are so many (and so diverse) memorials to the murdered Jews, right in the heart of Berlin. Here on the other side of the world, I've sometimes gotten the impression that modern Germans are a little grumpy about being weighted with the memories of this past. I'm glad to know that they do maintain permanent markers to remind all of us what evils we are capable of, at our worst. Thanks.

Even the word "trolley" in itself sounds relaxed.
