JaTran

The JaTran is the only form of public transportation you'll find in Jackson. Unfortunately, it won't get you many places. The Jackson metro area is made up of three counties: Hinds, Rankin and Madison. The JaTran only runs in Hinds county, but if you want to get around downtown, it's an option. I've never seen many people on the bus though.

Local transportation is this week's Everyday Life theme. Click on the link to see more types of transport from around the world.

un bon thème, car c'est les transports en commun qui permettent de se déplacer facilement, et en banlieue parisienne c'est souvent la galère (pour aller a Paris oui, pour aller d'une banlieue a une autre non ;( )

The only form of public transport? Eek. So you really have to have your own car to get around? That's bad news for people like me who don't drive.

On a different note, I like the 'swish' of the bus. In the thumbnail, I thought the bus was really shaped like that — very sleek. :)

Looks really like extraterrestrial. Great shot!

It took me a second to see the green at the front of the bus. I thought it was shaped very odd, lol.

Seems to be a problem with a lot of urban mass transit.

I like the white painting on the bus side.

How unusual a shape! Looks like it's ready to take off!

We've got the same problem. Very little public transportation and what there is doesn't ever go where you want to go!

I've never seen a bus that looks like that! I live in the boonies and shy away from cities. I'd probably be surprise at many things if I went to a city! ~karen

I guess most people prefer to drive. It's a nice looking bus, especially since it has no advertising on it.

We're the same here - only the bus to get those around without a car. A car is really a must here as Tucson is very spread out.

I too was tricked into believing we had an oddly shaped bus on our hands! :)

Effective design, no doubt.

I guess public transportation isn't very important to the people of Jackson. So how do people get around the city?

Who knew the old JaTran would cause so much excitement!

EG Wow: Everyone around here has cars. Even 16 year-olds typically have their own wheels!

Lois: I never thought about the lack of advertising on the JaTran. I guess not enough people see it to make it worth advertiser dollars!

Hilda: If you lived here, you would drive. You can't really get anywhere without a car.

Interesting. When I lived in the city I didn't drive and used the bus to go anywhere. My in-laws never had a car---buses can go everywhere but move out and your are carbound. MB

Le problème c'est que les gens ne prennent pas les transports donc ils ne sont pas un minimum rentabilisés, donc autant ne pas en proposer. C'est pourtant un beau bus !

That's a fancy limo-looking bus. Too bad it doesn't go everywhere!

But Jackson sure isn't alone among medium-size cities that offer little if any public transportation. Wish somebody could solve that. We travel and drive everywhere, but whenever we're in a City with decent public transportation we use it and love it. Just wish it were more widely available. For instance, here in North Ft Myers FL, it may as well be nonexistant.

I like your blog and your philosophy BTW!

It's a pity that cities in the US don't offer enough public transportation to their citizens. I guess everybody have one car (or two) available all the time. It's unfortunately negative for the environments. Your bus is a nice bus, which I thought was a kind of a racing car from the small picture at Everyday Life .... :D

I picked a bus for my post too.
