Black Rose Theater

This is the Black Rose Theater in downtown Brandon where I am currently involved in the production of Mame. The building has been transformed from a movie theater into a stage theater. Historically, the theater was for "colored" people in the says of segregation. But don't let the name fool you, it is called the black rose because it's located on Black Street.

Most people in Mississippi are very open to other races now, however there are a few people on both sides of that color barrier that keep the embers smoldering.

Actually, the street was called black street because of the black walnut trees that used to grow at the end of it. Nothing to do with race. After it was a movie house, the building became a battery warehouse for many years. In 1991 the theatre was started with "Night of january 16" The first show in this building was the Fantastiks.
