Abe: I just put out a regular songbird mix in my feeder. It has those little grainy seeds and black oil sunflowers.
I used to put out suet for the peckers, but it would get all moldy and gross. It seems they like this mix better. We have a lot of these guys around here as my neighborhood used to be a pine forest.
These birds are very attractive but can be real nuisances, too. We had some that loved to peck on the palm trees just outside of our bedroom window in Fort Lauderdale...what a racket!
Oh wow..I have never seen one. You mentioned in a comment on my blog that you get them and red-bellied. I also get red-bellied and downy. Last summer a red-bellied brought its offspring to show it how to use the suet feeder...too cute..Michelle

You sure capture some beauties at that bird feeder of yours!
He looks like he knows the camera is there and is saying "is this my best side?"
Perhaps he's looking for you or listening. Birds are such beautiful creatures, and you're so lucky to have snapped his photo.
You're so close! You must be good friends with the beautiful bird :D
Sharp!
What was he eating? Or what do you provide in the way of food that might have attracted him? It is a very nice shot.
Wonderful shot! Sharp focused and crisp details!!
Pixellicious Photos
He's welcome at my feeder, anytime.
Always catches my eye too, even in the portal!

What a nice looking bird.
Gorgeous Redheaded Woodie. It would be my favorite yardbird, if I had one.
A beautiful bird and how nice that it came into your yard.
Please send one of those to Idaho! Gorgeous.

Incredible shot of the Red-headed Woodpecker Halcyon! It would b a lifer for me having never birded in the eastern US. Love that expression!
We don't have the red-headed woodpecker. What a beauty!
