Theme Day: When People Think of Jackson

I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is, it stopped raining today and the sun was out. Perfect weather for picture-taking. The bad news is, I was unable to find the subject I originally intended for this photo.

The Mississippi Museum of Art recently relocated to this brand new building just next to the Davis Planetarium. Apparently there used to be a giant statue of Andrew Jackson here. Since he is my city's namesake, I thought it would make a perfect picture for today's theme. I hope you'll enjoy the newly erected art museum in his place. And I'm sure Jackson is not gone forever, he's probably just moved and hopefully I'll find him another day!

Please visit the other blogs around the world taking part in today's theme. There are some very creative responses!

Jackson moved? he sure is getting around. Oddly enough, I think of Johny Cash's tune "Jackson" when I think of jackson.

We got married in a fever, hotter than a pepper sprout,
We've been talkin' 'bout Jackson, ever since the fire went out.
I'm goin' to Jackson, I'm gonna mess around,
Yeah, I'm goin' to Jackson,
Look out Jackson town.

etc. etc.

Nice picture, when I think of Jackson, I think of the trips my family used to take from St. Louis to New Orleans. My mom used to say that the highways were so rough in Jackson made her feel like she had square wheels.

I have never been there...that will be a stop for us next time.

You are right about Elvis...originally from Tupelo, I think. He was more our adopted son, wasn't he? :)

When I think of Jackson, I think of the big rodeo there in February. Do they still have it? My sister-in-law lives there, but it's been a long time since we have been over.

Never been there, but perhaps the statue is housed inside the museum now? Quite modern structured museum! Good day!

He is inside.

No worries. It's still a pretty picture. I'm sure you'll get another chance to take a photo of the one you want.

Thanks for all your comments on what Jackson means to you. I admit that I had a really tough time with this theme, although it's been such fun looking through the other blogs.

Perhaps Jackson is inside, but I sort of hope not. I like it better if he's outside for the whole city to enjoy.

hey,
i've very recentyl started enjoying Johnny Cash's songs, and have wondered about "Jackson"

just read dusty lens's comments, and realised that this is the town the song's based in:
We got married in a fever, hotter than a pepper sprout,
We've been talkin' 'bout Jackson, ever since the fire went out.
I'm goin' to Jackson, I'm gonna mess around,
Yeah, I'm goin' to Jackson,
Look out Jackson town.

will be visiting you more often now :) and looking forward to photos from within the museum

Arent your museums free for everyone?

Halcyon said...

Museums in the US are generally not free. In France, even less so! The entrance fee at the MMA is only $5 for adults. That still makes it accessible for most people.

They are often free on Wednesdays because the children do not go to school here then. Art galleries are usually free too. In England also.

I paid 8 euro to go into Le Mont St Michael recently though. Having walked up there.
