Old Beetle

I spotted this old VW in a parking lot the other day. It's amazing how tough these things can be. I think this is a really old one and I always enjoy seeing them!

Doorway Detail

This is a detail on the doorways at the War Memorial Building in downtown Jackson. It was built under the Works Progress Administration. These doors were hand cast in aluminum and depict different types of war instruments and the year they first came on the scene. It's a beautiful piece of work.

Rose of Sharon

We have had a really mild fall so far, it's been it the high 80s most days. Because of that, a lot of flowers are still hanging around which is very nice. I spotted this rose of sharon in the Fondren area this weekend and got a quick shot for you to enjoy. So enjoy!

This is the Mississippi Secretary of State's office. It's just across the street from the current state capitol building. The state and US flags look nice waving in the breeze.

Caroline Watertower

The watertower over Lake Caroline. I think these structures are the quintessential sight in American cities.

Temple Doorway

A doorway into the Hindu Temple with explicit instructions on what one is to do and not to do inside the temple.

A blue heron takes flight over Lake Caroline. A beautiful sight, indeed!

This is what a cotton bowl looks like close-up. I can't imagine what it was like in the old days when people had to pick this stuff by hand. I'm sure there were some bloody fingers.

The Supremes

Now for the big finish, it's the supreme dudes of the Mississippi Supreme Court! This is the last in my series of these statues. I don't know if they were modeled on real historic figures or if they just chose generic old-timey men. In any case, the exhibit at the Old Capitol Museum is really interesting. And it's free!

I'll be out this weekend playing golf in Alabama. It looks like we're going to have good weather. Hope it's nice whereever you are too!

Senators

As promised, here are the real, fake old-timey Senators! Looks like they're having some interesting discussions.

Columned Doorway

I believe this is another lawyer's office in downtown Jackson. The doorway does look nice with those columns though.

The Governor

This is a scene from the Old Capitol building. He's our real, fake old-timey governor! But the real governor would have worked from this very room, if not at this very desk.

Fall Roses

I had a bumper crop of roses this year. They bloomed all spring and summer and there are still quite a few buds this far into fall. I really enjoy these beauties.

Jackson recently got its own Hindu Temple. It's really impressive, especially considering it's right next to a trailer park.

More mothers

Mothers seem to be a central theme in war memorials and the like. This statue is right in front of our state capitol building. It honors the mothers of the confederate soldiers. It seems like a bit of a controversial monument to me, but I guess that's the point - mothers were innocent, they only birthed the sons that they would later mourn.

War Memorial Building: Part II

This is the second statue that frames the grand entrance columns to the War Memorial Building. This one just has WWI soldiers. I really wish I could find some explanation for these two pieces of work. They are nicely done though.

Grand exit

While I was looking through my photos from the War Memorial Building, I realized I don't have a proper photo of the entrance. I hope this look out will do. Here you see the tomb of the unknown soldier again. But those grand columns really make the building.

War Memorial Building: Part I

This sculpture shows soldiers from WWI contrasted with farmers and field workers. I'm not exactly sure what the meaning behind this is supposed to be, but I think it is perhaps the transition from civilian life to soldier or how civilians and soldiers must work together. The middle figure appears to be a symbol for mothers.

If anyone has any insight, I'd love to hear more. I couldn't find any information on the internet about this particular sculpture.

Unknown Soldier

Mississippi's take on the tomb of the unknown solider. I have never seen the one in Washington, but I think this is a nice tribute. It stands in the courtyard of the War Memorial Building. It's an old Art Deco style structure built under the Works Progress Administration. I'll show you more this week.

Graffiti Be Gone

This was my runner-up choice for yesterday's theme day. You can see where the city has painted over some tags. This is the old high school which has been converted to a "cultural" center, but I won't go further into my feelings on that subject today.

Hope you are having a nice weekend. It's perfect golf weather here. I'll probably check out the final round of the Viking Classic tomorrow. Maybe I can even sneak in a couple of shots, though they typically check your bags and such for cameras. Maybe I can get an iPhone shot at least.

October Theme Day: Toilet Graffiti

For today's theme day, I'm taking you into the forbidden (for some) territory of the women's bathrooms at Hal and Mal's restaurant. I guess if you're being technical, this is not really graffiti as it was painted this way on purpose. But there's a dearth of graffiti in this town, so this was the best I could find. And I'm sure English speakers will get a laugh from the play on words.
