McDade's

McDade's is the only remaining locally owned grocery store in Jackson. I don't actually shop there because there aren't any locations near where I live. But I have always admired this particular branch on the fringe of downtown Jackson. I like the old-English look I guess.

Would that be store #14 or is it the street address?

Oh m'word! That's the old Jitney 14, isn't it?? On Fortification St? I well remember that store from when I lived in Belhaven in my 20s. I wonder if there are any Jitney Jungles left? I always loved its Tudor exterior. I heard that the white ladies used to "shop" there - they had a raised seating area by the registers. The white ladies would sit there, with their gloves on, and watch their black maids shop around the store. Seems mighty silly now.

I guess you have your answer here Per. I had no idea about the old Jitney. Thank goodness things have changed since then!!!

cette entrée me fait penser à une grande grange.
This entry makes me think of a large barn.

This is the old "Jitney Jungle" where Eudora Welty used to shop. She lived in the Belhaven neighborhood. Right next door is Basil's Cafe, which used to be the post office where she would mail her manuscripts. The owners of Basil's have kept the old p.o. window and have some photos up. Very interesting, and really good food too. You should check it out next time you're there.

Thanks for the info ted and lori!
I am actually doing a performance at Basil's next month. It's nice to know a little about the history beforehand. :)

Did you live in Jackson before?

I like this kind of interaction. One guy in Stockholm who doesn't have a clue ;) asks a question. Others jump in with more information. Blogging, the way it should be.
