This is what a cotton bowl looks like close-up. I can't imagine what it was like in the old days when people had to pick this stuff by hand. I'm sure there were some bloody fingers.

A very hard life I imagine. Glad those days are over. Nice photo.
j'entends le blues sortis des champs de coton
I haven't seen a cotton field in years. Thats one of the things I remember about driving down 55 in Mississippi.
What a nice shot. I'm afraid that you're right. It was certainly a hard job to pick the cotton.
Lots of bloody fingers!
I don't mean to be a smarty pants, but I beg to correct you. That is the cotton bowl, not the bloom! The blooms appear on the young cotton plants in the spring. They are white at first and as they age they turn pink/rose. The bloom looks like the bloom of okra.
I was raised on the farm and I had to pick cotton by hand way back in the 1940s. Yes, those cotton burs will stick your tender hands and make them bloody and sore. About the time I married and left home, Daddy started having the cotton picked by a machine.
I love driving past cotton fields and seeing the cotton still on the plants. I would hate to have to pick it though!
Oh, so that's what it looks like!
i haven't seen a cotton field in a long time either, used to see them all across arkansas on the way to missouri...
Interesting comments about a terrific photo. Have never seen cotton at any growing stage of development so it was great to see it.
Dorothy: I always welcome corrections! It's good to learn. Thanks for the explanation. And I'm glad you got out of the "picking" business before your hands went to ruin! :)
I've never picked cotton, but I have held cotton balls in my hand. I think we bought them at the supermarket.
Oh, wait, you're talking about...ok, I get it.
Hey, we saw tons of cotton on our trip west...through Alabama and Mississippi mostly!
I am sure I have never seen one of these before that was not on the end of a Q-tip. But, then again, I'm a northerner. (I first typed "Yankee," but the Red Sox fan in me had to change it.)
