Dividing the Estate

Two weekends ago, my husband and I went to see Dividing the Estate at New Stage. It was a really great story - a family drama about money and property and who's getting it. The cast was really strong. It was one of the best shows we've seen there. Bravo!

Cardinal Conversation

It's nice to see a man taking care of his lady. These two are frequent visitors to my feeder, although I don't usually see them together.

Bye-bye Mississippi College

My German class at MC has come to an end. It was fun and I think it has helped me. I wish I could take next semester's class but I can't swing it with my job. I took a few last shots when I was there last. This is the back side of the cafeteria. I really love those windows and the landscaping is nice too!

Eudora Welty Series

The three readings for the Eudora Welty New Play Series went great this weekend. The play I read for came in second place with a cash prize of $250. I wish it would have come in first, but the good news is a local theater group will probably produce it next year. I feel proud to have been the first Diane in Jackson anyway. It was a lot of fun!

New Bridge

Last week I showed you the old railway bridge. And as promised here's a look at the new US Highway 90 bridge that links Ocean Springs to Biloxi. The old road was destroyed during Katrina and they built up this replacement in record time. It's bigger and better as the middle section is high enough for ships to pass through. I believe the old bridge had one of those drawbridge-like mechanisms.

Reflecting

This photo comes to you from the Mississippi Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Ocean Springs. The memorial is really lovely, a very simple structure built of black and white granite with the names and pictures of the men who gave their lives engraved into the stone.

I was really touched by this Bible verse and the reflection is perfect. May we never forget these young men who gave their lives in the name of our country.

Bench

This bench is right in front of New Stage Theater. I've been spending my evenings there this week in preparation for the big reading this weekend. It's been fun getting to know new people and of course it's exciting to work on a brand new play!

Tonight is our evening of respite, but we'll be back in the theater at 10am tomorrow. May the best show win!

Giant Azaleas

More azalea bushings. These come to you from Shell Landing Golf Course on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. I can't believe how full they were!!

Azaleas!

My azaleas looked beautiful this year. Sadly the blooms have now faded or blown away with the recent winds. I enjoyed them while they were here though. And I have some wonderful photographic memories!

PS: I'm going to be in a play reading this weekend at New Stage Theater. Each year the theater hosts a play-wrighting competition and the theater hosts staged readings of the top three before choosing the winner. My play is written by a local playwright, so I'm obviously rooting for her to win. It's at 3pm this Saturday, if anyone around town wants to stop by, it's free and open to the public.

Blue Man

This is my newest backyard visitor, a blue grosbeak. I've seen him at the feeder for about a week or so now. I believe he's made a home in one of my neighbor's trees. He's a beautiful friend and I'm looking forward to more visits!

Railway Bridge

This is the old railway bridge connecting the gulf cities of Biloxi and Ocean Springs. I'm not sure if the bridge is still in use or not. There is a turning portion to allow for ships to pass through, but it was always open when we drove past.

Mississippi National

This shot comes to you from the Mississippi National golf course on the gulf coast. My husband and I were paired with two other players and one of them had a false leg. That's something I really love about golf, it's a sport for everyone - men, women, young, older. We had a lot of fun playing with our new friends!

Biloxi Light

The famous (or so I'm told) structure that sits right in the middle of the main beach drag in Biloxi. It survived Katrina and is featured on the Mississippi license plate. It's also apparently a nice place to stop for a read.

First Rose

My Chicago Peace rose is blooming. I've got three or four full roses on it right now and several other buds just waiting to burst. Ahhh... spring!

Elvis has left the building...

Elvis!

Here's my reason for visiting Biloxi this weekend... Elvis Costello! He is my favorite artist of all time. I last saw him in concert in Paris in 2002 at The Grand Rex. He was as spectacular today as then. He'll be in New Orleans next weekend. Perhaps another trip is in order.

Old School

The Watch They Keep was staged by the Clinton Brickstreet players inside the auditorium at the old Clinton junior high school where they have been performing for a number of years. As long as the city owned the property, they didn't mind renting it out at a reasonable price to the theater group. Unfortunately the property has been purchased by a private entity and the space will no longer be available. I hope this does not cause the Brickstreet Players to go defunct.

It's a nice old building in any case. The kids must have enjoyed those big windows back in the day.

Idyllic Friday

This picture was taken last Friday on the golf course. This is one of my favorite holes. It's a nice little par 3 over the water. And it looks fantastic when all the flowers are in bloom.

Edible Dragon

My husband took me out to Sakura Bana last Friday after work. We enjoyed several sushi rolls, including this beautiful dragon. I assure you, he tasted as good as he looks!

Live Music

After the theater, my husband and I stopped at Underground 119 for some drinks. We were lucky to catch some live music too! The band was called The Juvenators, but the man pictured here playing the harmonica was just a dude from the audience who asked if he could sit in on a couple of songs. Very cool!

My live action shots may not be up to snuff with Olivier's from Evry yet, but I'm working on it. I don't think this band was used to people taking their picture, especially with my big Nikon. I felt like a paparazzi.

The Watch They Keep

My husband and I enjoyed some more theater this past weekend. We saw the world premiere of a new play written by a local writer. The Watch They Keep centered on a family whose matriarch has descended into the depths of Alzheimer's and the toll it takes on the family. It was well-written with both serious and light-hearted moments. I hope it will be seen outside of Mississippi soon!

Hawthorne

This is the first picture I've posted that was taken with the new Nikon D3000. These hawthornes are in my very own yard. It's the first time I've ever seen them bloom.

Reflections: Baptist Health Center

The Baptist Health Center is located on the Mississippi College campus. I pass this building every time I go to my German class and it always catches my eye. Now that the weather is getting nicer, I thought I'd stop to catch the window reflections.

I was called for jury duty last week. Luckily, it hasn't been a full two years since I served on a jury and I was excused. As I was leaving, I got this wonderful shot of the courthouse with a blue, blue sky overhead. It was too pretty out to sit around judging someone anyway!

A Dip?

The hospital where I take the yoga class also has a lovely indoor pool. I've never actually swam there, but it looks like it would be heavenly with all the windows and skylights.

Azaleas and Parking

The azaleas are starting to bloom! The ones in my yard are ready to burst open at any moment, but I caught these outside the hospital where I take yoga. Lovely!
